Goa CM meets Edu Dept officials over falling rank in National Achievement Survey Report

Published

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday held meeting with the State Education department officials to raise concerns over state falling below national average in certain areas as per National Achievement Survey Report.

National Achievement Survey (NAS) is a nationally representative large-scale survey of students’ learning undertaken by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The NAS gives a system level reflection on effectiveness of school education. Findings help compare the performance across spectrum and across population in order to find the desirable direction for improvements.

In the tweet, after holding meeting with the department officials, Sawant said that focused efforts will be made to improve the learning outcomes in Mathematics of students in Goa.

The Chief Minister tweeted “Chaired a meeting with the Department of Education. We are concerned over the data of National Achievement Survey Report as Goa falls below national average in certain areas. Focused efforts will be made to improve the learning outcomes in Mathematics of students in Goa.”

“The Govt is considering implementation of CCS rules for employees at Aided schools,” he said in another tweet.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Sawant said that the blame on poor performance should not be on the government run schools alone as they contribute for only 20 per cent of the state’s students’ population.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is seriously concerned about the National Achievement Survey Report released in the year 2021.

He said that 80 per cent of students study in aided schools. Government provides them grant-in-aid for support.

Sawant said that the Teachers should be in teaching “full time” without having any side business for the distraction.

The Chief Minister, who also holds Education portfolio, said that school infrastructure of Goa government has reduced considerably in the wake of increase in the government aided schools.

Sawant said that since the government pays for the salaries and other grant-in-aid support, aided schools were also needed to increase their performance.

The Chief Minister was concerned as NAS 2021 has indicated that Goan students have shown poor performance as compared to the national average in Mathematics, Languages, Social Sciences and Sciences.

“In math we are below the national average. The national average is 32 per cent and we are 30 per cent for Class 10. In Class 8, the national average is 36 per cent and we are at 32 per cent. In Class 5, the national average is 44 per cent and we are 39 per cent, ” the Chief Minister  said.

He pointed out that for Class third,  the national average is 57 per cent and we are 55 per cent.
